When you need to fix a broken window in your house or the windscreen of your car for that matter, you want a
replacement that is as good as the original.
For your broken window, you accept the replacement solution proposed by the builder. But when it comes to your
car, many people prefer the manufacturer branded part over an aftermarket replacement. What they do not realise
is that the branded part was not produced by the car manufacturer in the first place, but by a glass
manufacturer.
For each new model, car manufacturers request bids from several glass manufacturers. The glass supplier that can
match the manufacturer’s strict specifications with the best bid is then contracted to produce the windscreens.
This company is the only one allowed to put the carmaker’s logo and name on the windscreen. However, if the car
manufacturers can get a better deal, then they will switch from one glass supplier to another, so even the very
same branded windscreens could have come from different suppliers.
While only one manufacturer can make the branded windscreen for a particular model, all the other glass suppliers
that make windscreens can produce aftermarket products. They manufacture these according to the same quality
standards, and will glue sensors, brackets and antennas using the same technology, expertise, resources and
facilities for the same premium quality glass as the branded product.
As the aftermarket products must conform to the same quality standards such as ISO 9001, and as they may even
have been made by a former supplier to the car manufacturer, then they will accurately match the specifications
of the manufacturer branded product.
